AOP is an acronym for Advanced Oxidation Process and AEP is an acronym for Advanced Electrolysis Process. In a nutshell, pool water is sanitized by producing hydroxyl radicals in the water. Hydroxyl radicals eliminate the need for salt or chlorine which is a big deal because the entire pool industry has been trying to deal with consumer demand for chlorine free swimming for over a decade now. AOP systems use ozone together with UV light to produce a small amount of hydroxyl radicals in the water. AEP systems use titanium electrolysis to produce massive amounts of hydroxyl radicals in the water. AOP systems tend to be less expensive than AEP systems simply because the Hydroxyl production rate is lower.

There are currently two main competitors in the AEP market (Ecosmarte and Drinkable Pool Water Systems). Pictured above, the Ecosmarte system uses a small AEP chamber which houses (2) small one-sided titanium bars and the Drinkable Pool Water System which uses a large AEP chamber housing (8) large double sided titanium bars. Since titanium surface area is a huge factor in the systems ability to produce hydroxyls the DPWS has a clear advantage over the Ecosmarte system.

The downside is that the Drinkable Pool Water System is slightly more expensive than the Ecosmarte system and the DPWS must be installed by a certified installer which may or may not be available in your area. Certified Installers are listed on drinkablepoolwater.com.
